While there are many things to love about 6mm Max, including increased velocity and higher BC bullets, current AR-15 owners will love the fact that, apart from the barrel, every component of the AR-15 (including the same bolt carrier group for 556) is compatible with the 6mm Max cartridge.
The 6mm Max Cartridge: A Deeper Dive
6mm Max is designed for the unmodified mil-spec .378 bolt face, and a full mass bolt carrier group. This means that 6mm Max uses the same standard, unmodified, AR-15 bolt carrier group as the 556, avoiding bolt wear and breakage issues commonly seen with cartridges like the 6mm ARC.
Using the 350 Legend as a parent case for the 6mm Max, Precision Ballistics was able to increase and use an OAL of 2.30 for a range of bullet weights from 55 gr to 105 gr, allowing for inherent accuracy across these weights. And because 350 Legend was originally designed for the AR-15, 6mm Max feeds flawlessly from a 350 Legend magazine.
Advantages of the 6mm Max include over 556
Increased velocity
Greater range of bullet weights
Use bullets with higher BC
Legal in more states to hunt large game
Advantages of the 6mm Max over 6mm ARC
Uses unmodified 556 bolt face (more durable)
Wider operational envelope (ie. improved reliability when shooting suppressed or unsuppressed)
So, exactly what kind of velocity can be expected from 6mm Max? According to the Precision Ballistics website, “The 6mm MAX can launch an 87 gr Berger VLD at 3009 fps from a 24” barrel … and stays supersonic past 1000 yards.” In SOLGW’s video of Mike Mihalski comparing 6mm Max to 556, he chronographed impressive velocities from a stubby 10.5” barrel: 55gr @ 3165 fps, 62gr @ 2913 fps, 77gr @ 2687 fps.
Being a new-to-market cartridge, ammo availability and cost is naturally a concern for many shooters. As of this writing, 6mm Max ammunition can be purchased through Precision Ballistics at $1.50 per round for the following options: 58gr V-Max, 80gr ELD-VT, 85gr Speer BTSP, 90gr ELD-X, 105gr HPBT
If you hand load, the 6mm Max has support from Starline Brass and reloading dies are available from Lee and Lyman.
